Langkawi is best met from a boat.

Borneo is a second trip, not a side trip.
Sabah and Sarawak are two and a half hours from the peninsula and travel like another country. The Great Apes
Two rehabilitation centres take visitors: Sepilok outside Sandakan and Semenggoh outside Kuching. Both run to a feeding time, both are open forest rather than enclosure, and both are honest that the apes may not come when the fruit season is good. Sandakan pairs Sepilok with sun bears and the rainforest centre in one morning.

The Kinabatangan
The river is a narrow strip of forest between oil palm, which is exactly why the animals concentrate along it. Cruises run at first light and again at dusk: proboscis monkeys settling in the riverside trees, hornbills crossing, pygmy elephants if the season is right. It is a stay, not a day trip, and the lodges are small.

Mulu
Mulu is reached by one short flight and nothing else. Deer Cave holds a passage over 100 metres high and, on a dry evening, several million bats leaving it in a ribbon; Clearwater runs a river through limestone. The show caves go on a booked schedule and the Pinnacles trek is a separate three days.
